First International Workshop on Software Engineering Aspects of Cyber-Physical Systems (SE4CPS 2019)

Motivations and Objectives

Increasing numbers of objects in our day life are controlled by computers: phones, aircraft, cars, buildings, manufacturing machines, musical instruments, etc. In these so-called cyber-physical systems, computers interact directly with the physical world through sensors and actuators. Those systems are becoming the key infrastructure and backbone of our society and are at the heart of revolutionary changes in our daily lives and economy.
The sophistication and complexity of CPSs keeps increasing, since they must realize more functions with limited resources, which makes them increasingly difficult to build and manage. In particular, the cyber (software) part of these systems is growing rapidly, and has become a key part in CPS,  as they are the basis of operation for these systems.
For instance, the avionics industry has experienced exponential growth in software size, with the number of software lines of code in commercial aircraft roughly doubling every four years. These constant changes leads to the cost of rework due to the late discovery of design errors, reaching up to 70% of the cost of the software system itself. Therefore, the software aspects of CPS induce major challenges in their development.

Venue

This whole day workshop will take place on February 14 2019 and is co-located with the 12th Innovations in Software Engineering Conference (ISEC 2019) in Pune, India.

Targeted Audience

This workshop aims at gathering researchers and practitioners addressing the challenges induced by the software aspects of CPS, in order to identify synergy, common problems, solutions and visions for the future of this area. Strong interactions among participants will be favored to provide constructive feedback for accepted workshop papers and develop future collaborations and community building. A plenary brainstorming and discussion session will be planned at the end of the day. The discussion topics will be selected based on the interests of the participants.

Notification of acceptance : December 26, 2018

Last date for camera ready paper : January 10, 2019

Topics of Interest

The workshop seeks both contributions from industry identifying practical problems and ongoing promising research work or visions from both academia and industry. Topics include but are not limited to:


  *   Modeling of CPS
  *   Formalisms, languages and tools for verification of CPS
  *   Model management for CPS development
  *   Ontology of CPS

Accepted papers will become part of the workshop proceedings and will be submitted for inclusion into the ACM Digital Library.


Submission

The workshop welcomes submissions on:

1.Full research papers of eight to ten pages describing on-going work on novel or improvements of existing solutions for problems related to software engineering aspects of CPSs.
2. Short research papers of four to five pages on initial work that may not yet have been fully developed.
3. Position papers of four to five pages on new ideas and visions.
4. Industry papers of four to ten pages describing experiences related to the challenges of software development for CPSs.

The presented content must be original, i.e. not published anywhere else.

Formatting Instructions

The specified page lengths include figures, bibliography and annexes. Papers must be in pdf format, written in English and formatted according to the standard ACM format and submitted via EasyChair.

Submission of Camera-ready Version of Paper

The authors of accepted papers will receive further instructions for preparing their camera-ready versions. Accepted papers will be published in the ACM digital library.

Evaluation

At least three members of the program committee will evaluate the technical and writing quality of each submission as well as its relevance to the workshop.
